Curious information about New Zealand

* More than the half of the soil is suitable for cultivation and a fourth part is forest area.

* New Zealand is located in a moderate area, for this reason the climate is normally soft and humid and there´s basically no difference between seasons.

* New Zealand has a notable biota and approximately 75% of the species are endemic.

* New Zealand generates its energy from hydroelectric resources, due its numerous water currents from many mountain. They use very little fossil fuels.

* Native Maori and iwi take part in the political decisions.

* The most serious threats to the ecology of New Zealand come from the imported species. They have introduced approximately 2.000 exotic species including at least 30 species of birds, 20 species of mammals, in addition to numerous species of European wasps and bees. The most problematic exotic animals are the falangirian animals and the wild goats.

* New Zealand was one of the last suitable areas for the establishment of mankind.

* The population of New Zealand, according to estimations of 2002, were 3.908.037 inhabitants, which represents a population density of 14 hab/km˛. where three quarters of the entire population live in the Northern part of the island.

* Although the economy of New Zealand still depends alot on the agricultural sector, about 86% of the population is concentrated in the cities; slightly less than the half of the population live in the four biggest cities.

* Of 2.000 indigenous species, approximately 1.500 are exclusive of the country; clear examples of this flora is seen in the tuataras the only surviving species related to the ancient reptiles that lived 200 million years ago. The animals live in a few small islands opposite to the coast of New Zealand. There´re night animals, they sleep during the day and hunt insects, birds or small lizards in the night. When a predator grabs a tuatara by its tail, the animal easily remove that appendix and grow a new shortly afterwards.
